Underlying Beef Between Drake & Lyor Cohen?

Written by thejasminebrand in Uncategorized

Complex magazine chops it up w/ Lyor Cohen. They talk Drake, Cudi, Free Music, etc. Although he doesn’t go into great detail, he does mention his disappointment w/ Drake on the business side…Peep a few excerpts below:

Speaking of new artists, many people were expecting Drake to sign with you at Warner Music. Did it disappoint you that he ended up going with Universal Motown?

Lyor Cohen: A very disappointing thing. But I’m a lover of rap music. I want good things to happen to this industry. I have so much good fortune and already have everything. I feel like we have a terrific company, and we’re very old-school in that once we grip someone’s hand, fundamentally we believe that’s a deal. But that’s not this generation. They’ll grip someone’s hand and say they’re coming, but if someone offers them more they will renege. That’s not how we get down.

Did Drake do that?

Lyor Cohen: I’ll keep that between Drake and myself.

Have you met any young executives that you see a lot of yourself in?

Lyor Cohen: I haven’t. Only because this generation is handicapped by the era of excess. I grew up in an era of love and swimming upstream, determined to prove people wrong. We had chips on our shoulders, like, “We belong here.” But now it’s the most popular, biggest segment of the industry. We’ve had a decade of private planes and Maybachs. That’s not the era that I came from. The era I came from, I had zero expectation that I was going to make any money. I was determined to prove to the gatekeepers of the industry that we had a place here and we weren’t going to relinquish our opportunity. I never had to keep up with nobody because we were all on subways. So it was never like, “My subway is bigger and flyer than your subway.” And there was a real fraternal order. We were backstage with Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring, and we had zero fucking money. But everybody wanted us in the VIP room because we were doing something that was so important to them. People understood that it wasn’t if it was going to happen, it was when it was going to happen.

"The Humpty Dance" Turns 20!

Written by thejasminebrand in Uncategorized

This past spring, “The Humpty Dance” turned 20!  “The Humpty Dance,” climbed all the way to #11 on the pop charts, #7 on the R&B charts, and #1 on the Billboard Rap Singles chart. It was featured by Shock G’s flamboyant alter ego Humpty Hump. Rolling Stone acknowledges Digital Undergrounds, “Humpty Dance.” Peep an excerpts below:

Humpty seemed to go hand in hand with the “Black Bart” t-shirts that were equally ubiquitous that summer. The Simpsons had only been on the air for a few months, yet everywhere you went, you saw bootleg Black Bart shirts. (The other big t-shirt that summer? Washington D.C. mayor Marion Barry had just gotten busted smoking crack on camera, so if you lived in D.C., Virginia or the Carolinas, you saw a lot of “THE BITCH SET BARRY UP” shirts.) Like Bart, Humpty became part of the culture, an Eshu-Elegba trickster god in Groucho drag, the stuff of legend. He made occasional reappearances in Digital Underground’s music — he got married in “Tie the Knot,” and defended his nose as an Afrocentric political statement in “No Nose Job.” But we all owe him for “The Humpty Dance.” Thank you, Humpty Hump. All over America, Burger King employees are still mopping up after you. Here for more on why we shall never forget the “humpty dance.”

French-Born, American Artist Louise Bourgeois Dies

Written by thejasminebrand in Uncategorized

Well-know, French-born American artist, Louise Bourgeois, died at 98. Bourgeois was well known late in her career for sculptures, drawings and prints. Among her most familiar sculptures was the much-exhibited “Nature Study” (1984), a headless sphinx with powerful claws and multiple breasts. Perhaps the most provocative was “Fillette” (1968), a large, detached latex phallus. Ms. Bourgeois can be seen carrying this object, nonchalantly tucked under one arm, in a portrait by the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe taken for the catalog of her 1982 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art. (In the catalog, the Mapplethorpe picture is cropped to show only the artist’s smiling face.) Here or here for more on the life of Bourgeois.

"Basketball Wives" Reunion Spoiler…Suzie Arrested for Assault

Written by thejasminebrand in Uncategorized

Photo Compliments of Contact Music

According to Reality Tea and Radar Online, some serious drama occurred during the pre-taped “Basketball Wives” reunion show.

According to RadarOnline, the drama started when “The show was taping and then the cast was told, ‘We have a surprise guest,” said a source.

That surprise guest ended being Sandra Lopez aka Plastic Surgery. Yes Sandra is the same alleged “groupie” who got a drink thrown in her face by Suzie during an earlier episode of the show this season. “Suzie got really p—– off and just got up and left, but not soon after, she came back with a huge bucket of water and threw it at Sandra.”

Things then took an uglier turn when “Sandra tried to run away, but in the process, she slipped in the water and fell,” recalled the insider. What happened next? Welp, she was allegedly arrested. I peeped her twitter page, but no mention yet.

We can all catch the reunion show on June 20th, VH1.
