Numbers-Don’t-Lie:: Diggy Simmons Discusses Poor “Unexpected Arrival” Album Sales

Diggy Simmons‘ debut album, “Unexpected Arrival,” served up some unexpected first week sales. The album only sold about 20k on its first week out. This could have something to do with the fact that his album leaked the week before its release date. Despite the number of albums sold, Diggy still made the Top 20 charts with “Unexpected Arrival” landing at number 13. Even with disappointing record sales the teenage heartthrob took it as a sign of inspiration for growth and even compared the flop to some big sellers like Jay-Z‘s “Reasonable Doubt” and Bruno Mars“Doo Wops and Hooligans.” In an interview with Karen Civil, Diggy responded to the sales saying,

“It’s about growth. You look at a whole bunch of people. Look at “Reasonable Doubt.” When that first came out, that wasn’t anything. And look at Jay now. You could look at Bruno Mars recently. When his “Doo Wops & Hooligans” came out, like 50,000 first weeks and ended up going double plat. So it’s about growth for me. I’m happy that the people who are listening to it are loving it. It’s like having an impact on your life and making them want to aspire to be whatever it is they want to be. Because that’s what “Unexpected Arrival” is about. It’s about making your arrival in life special, no matter what people say or if they don’t know what you’re capable of. It starts with the belief in you before you try to go and look for other people’s approval. I’m happy that it’s doing that for people.”

Diggy even tweeted a great quote about his situation,
I love his positivity. He isn’t letting his situation discourage him, while he travels the country promoting his new album. (We caught up with him at his stop at DTLR in Wheaton, MD. Read the interview here.) Peep the interview:
