Gearing up for BET Awards, this week, the network held a conference for the 2013 BET Awards. theJasmineBrand.com was in attendance (BTW it was BLAZING haute), getting the inside scoop on the upcoming awards show.

Here’s the quick and dirty. The press conference, was hosted by Stephen G. Hill, along with Chris Tucker (the host for the upcoming show), with Chris Brown, Tamar Braxton, Kendrick Lamar and Charlie Wilson presenting nominations. Drake has 12 nominations. Rappers Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz are nominated for eight awards each. Drake is nominated three times for the top prize, video of the year. His “Started From the Bottom,” will compete with his collaborations with 2 Chainz (“No Lie”) and A$AP Rocky (“Problems”). The top award has 10 nominees, including Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie,” Kanye West’s “Mercy,” ”Adorn” by Miguel and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop.” Both Chris Brown and R. Kelly will perform at the awards show.

Two quick highlights: After the press conference, we quickly chatted with Stephen G. Hill, asking him about the comparisons between the Essence Music Festival and BET’s now 3-day event, along with some of the challenges.

What was your biggest challenge with putting the event together?
Our biggest challenge is getting all of e things we want to into the finite time of the show, we have much more show than we have time for. Our show this year is going to be 3.5 hours long. When you add up all the time it’s really 3 hr 45min. So something has to get cut or we can’t add something in the show that we really want to.
Since BET announced that it was transitioning into a three day event, there have been lots of comparisons to the Essence Music Festival. What will differentiate this one from the Essence Music Festival?
You cant just get tickets for the event. Someone might say, I’m going to BET weekend and the response might be do you have tickets to the award show? No, I’m going just because its BET weekend. What we decided to do is just kind of volatilize that energy and make a kind of coming together of our folks around that energy that already existed.

During the press conference, Chris also announced that his next single will feature the late Aaliyah. Titled, ‘They Don’t Know’, the song will be on his upcoming sixth studio album, X.

I got something special for my fans. It’s called ‘They Don’t Know”. All new stuff that’s never been heard before, it’s something special for all my fans.  shot it in the hood, I wanted to bring both worlds together in the video and try to uplift the positive side of the community. I mean I come from Virginia, but everyone come from a broken home or broke, I remember when I was!
