[Interview] Ashanti Reveals What An Ex-Boyfriend Taught Her, Crazy Rumors & Best Piece Of Advice She’s Received in the Entertainment Business

The Soul Train Awards red carpet was brimming with beautiful entertainers. One in particular was Ashanti, the songstress that has always remained relevant since she first emerged on the label Murder Inc. After an album hiatus but acting overdrive, she’s gearing up to release new music just in time for the holidays. The multifaceted artist was candid enough to speak to The Jasmine Brand (blotting and all) about what’s upcoming for her and what she’s learned about herself through the years. “I have to be very careful about someone else,” is one of the many things she reveals. The Jasmine Brand: What do we have going on in terms of music and TV right now?

I’m super excited; my first single will be out the end of November featuring Rick Ross, super excited about that. Album will come later on called Braveheart off my label Written Entertainment. I love the album, last album I released was 08 so it took a long time to get the album together the way I like it and I feel think it’s perfect now so I love it. I have a movie coming December 7th. I partnered up with Lifetime, phenomenal experience, completely different character than anything I’ve ever done. I play a very uppity, snooty, mean to children kind of girl, something very different from who I am but I had a blast doing it. I have 4 new Christmas songs in the movie.

Didn’t we just see you in SVU?

Yes, I just did Law and Order.

Now before I let you go, random questions, what is the craziest rumor you ever heard about yourself?

Umm that’s hard, it’s too many but with all the rumors, I should probably have about four kids by now.

What is the biggest lesson you learned from an ex boyfriend about yourself?

I’m a strong woman and sometimes I have to be very careful about someone else because if you hurt somebody sometimes it’s very hard for that person to get over.

What’s the best piece of advice you learned about working in this industry?

It’s essential to have a great accountant, preferably a Jewish one [laughs].
