[VIDEO] Singer Denicia Defends Skin Bleaching: Lupita Nyong’o Doesn’t Have To Agree With Me

Dencia Whitenicious Channel 4
Nigerian and Cameroonian singer Denica has caused quite the skin color conversation with her “dark spot remover” cream Whitenicious. Earlier this year the singer released her product and advertised herself as a consumer of her own cream. With the slogan ‘say good bye to to pigmentation and spots forever‘, it appeared she used it on her entire body, not just the non-visible dark blemishes its advertised use is for. Since then the product sold out quickly, causing many to question her motives to her fans and the message that lighter is better. On her road to redemption of her beauty cream, she stopped by Channel 4 to defend the purpose of her brand. While the conversation can be a bit gaudy as she divulges the meaning behind ‘Whitenicious’ as “white is pure” and that “everybody needs Whitenicious” its an interesting read. Check out a few excerpts from her conversation about Lupita Nyong’o, the media, and being a bad role model.

The Media:

I was not selling that message, the media are selling that message. I didn’t say, buy the cream and look like Dencia…I said seven day, fast acting dark spot remover. It’s called reading comprehension. If people missed that class then it’s not my fault. If they think that their whole body is a dark spot then fine, because that’s not how I feel.

While many critics have spoken up in regards to what they call an ‘abomination’ it was Lupita Nyongo’s Essence Luncheon speech that struck a nerve (or two) with the African singer. She talked about a letter she received from a fan she saved from buying Dencia’s cream.

Dear Lupita,’ it reads, ‘I think you’re really lucky to be this Black but yet this successful in Hollywood overnight. I was just about to buy Dencia’s Whitenicious cream to lighten my skin when you appeared on the world map and saved me. My heart bled a little when I read those words. I could never have guessed that my first job out of school would be so powerful in and of itself and that it would propel me to be such an image of hope in the same way that the women of The Color Purple were to me….And so I hope that my presence on your screens and in the magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey. That you will feel the validation of your external beauty but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside, that there is no shade in that beauty.

While not being malicious but speaking on her truth, the singer didn’t take to lightly to her comments and took to her Twitter to blast the star.

& oh @LupitaNyongo cln’t talk abt the bleaching creams white people (companies) make cuz the white man pays her, they own her!

On Lupita’s Letter:

I don’t know her, her  story’s her story, that’s her personal life, I don’t care about it. I don’t care about her story, if I lighten my skin that’s my choice.

Being a role model:

When somebody’s your role model pick out the good things in the person and do it. I didn’t have to say if you wanted to be an artist you didn’t have to be light skin. There’s numerous dark skin artists out there if you want to look like them, there’s many confident women and your skin color does not induce or reduce your confidence.
