Kris Humphries Opens Up Relationship To Kim Kardashian ‘It Bothers Me When People Say Our Marriage Was Fake’, But Admits ‘I Should Have Known What I Was Getting Into’

Kris Humprhies has been pretty quiet since the dissolution of his marriage to Kim KardashianWhile she’s since married Kanye West and is the mother of three children, Humphries is now sharing new details about his history with Kardashian. He authored a personal essay and memoir about his life in The Players Tribune.

“The irony of my career is that I finally figured out what kind of player I was when I got to the Nets. I was going to try to grab 10 boards a game and shut up. I wasn’t The Guy. I was a grinder. I felt like I knew who I was, finally. And then I met a girl who happened to be really famous, and I got married, and…. Damn.”

“Look, I should have known what I was getting into. I was definitely naive about how much my life was going to change. But the one thing that really bothers me is whenever people say that my marriage was fake.”

He went on to say that his romance with Kardashian was as real as it gets, despite living in the somewhat unreal world of fame.

“There’s definitely a lot about that world that is not entirely real. But our actual relationship was 100% real. When it was clear that it wasn’t working… what can I say? It sucked. It’s never easy to go through the embarrassment of something like that — with your friends with your family… But when it plays out so publicly, in front of the world, it’s a whole other level. It was brutal.”

He confessed he wasn’t sure how to “handle” being a part of that lifestyle. He recalled a moment he was booed, but he wasn’t exactly sure why.

“Is it just because I’m That Guy from TV? Do they think I was trying to be famous? Is it because they think I disrespected the game of basketball? The last one killed me, because all I’ve ever wanted to be known for was basketball.”

Humprhies and Kardashian wed in a televised ceremony in 2011. She infamously filed for divorce 72 days later. Humphries said he could never get used to people trying to tape him in what was supposed to life’s everyday moments like pumping gas and going to the grocery store.

“That’s not natural. That’s not supposed to be real life.”

He went on to say he actually experienced anxiety when it came to large crowds.

“I didn’t want to leave my home. You feel like… I don’t know… the whole world hates you, but they don’t even know why. They don’t even know you at all. They just recognize your face, and they’re on you.”

He admitted that at times he would tell people he was his fellow NBA star Blake Griffin.

“I didn’t want to be Kris Humphries. It’s the craziest feeling in the world, not wanting to be yourself. And I didn’t even want to say anything to defend myself, because it felt like I couldn’t win. You can’t go up against the tabloids. You can’t go up against that machine. There’s no point. And even if I played that game, I felt like it would be disrespecting the game of basketball.”

Humprhies has said since then, he’s retired from the NBA. While he’s known for his role on Keeping Up With The Kardashians, he said he hopes that’s not all he’s remembered for.

“I get it. I signed up for it. I don’t want any pity at all. But I hope that true fans of basketball remember me as a grinder, as a guy who transformed into a heck of a rebounder, as a guy who always tried to put the game in the best light. I was never a person who wanted to be famous. I’m a guy from Minnesota who loves the game of basketball.”

Now, Humphries is using his business talents and opening up Five Guys franchises.
