Aoki Lee Simmons Admits She Bragged Too Much About Being Accepted Into Harvard: “I Was Probably The Most Annoying Person!”

Apparently humble pie is on the menu for Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons‘ daughter’s gradation dinner! Aoki Lee Simmons took to Instagram to share a moving essay on how she learned a lesson about humility after being accepted to the prestigious Harvard College.

“If you were within 10 miles of me within the month after I got into Harvard, you were in for a treat. Because I did not shut up about it, ever…It was genuine excitement veering into unintentional bragging. And for that month I was probably the most annoying person you knew.”

Aoki says that she had a hard time accepting her parents’ advice.

“…until my mom took me down a peg with a lecture on humility, being a braggart and attracting the evil eye. My reaction was horrendous to say the least, I pouted, I teared up, I accused her of being jealous, I accused her of not understanding how the college process works (hint: she totally did since she supported me and my sister all the way through it and went to a fantastic college herself). I went off to my room to rage about how my my mom ruins everything and kills my vibes and all those other teen complaints. I called my Dad to complain about how unfair my mom was being, and he told me he’d been wanting to say what she said for months…So then I started crying, really really hard.”

The soon-to-be high school graduate says that humility is especially important in our era of social media.

“So humility, I wouldn’t call it the most fun quality to cultivate. But in today’s social media fueled world, it might be the most important…It’s easy to get caught up in our accomplishment and joys, and want the whole world to know about them. And I’m not saying we shouldn’t share our good news, but I think we should share mindfully…Because it’s so easy to be on the flip side, struggling with feeling jealous and insecure.”
