Metro Boomin Addresses Kendrick Lamar & Drake Rap Beef: ‘Stan Culture Makes It Kind Of Weird’

Did Stan culture turn the Drake and Kendrick Lamar feud into something it was never intended to be?

Over the summer the two rappers had the entire world tuned in as they went back and forth in a heated rap feud. The drama between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, which had reportedly been brewing for years, reached a new level on March 22, when K-Dot responded to Drake and J. Cole’s 2023 song “First Person Shooter” by jumping on Future and music producer Metro Boomin’s “Like That.” On the track, Kendrick Lamar famously raps,

“F*ck sneak dissin’, first person shooter
I hope they came with three switches
I crash out, like, “F*ck rap, ” this Melle Mel if I had to
Got two T’s with me, I’m snatchin’ chains and burnin’ tattoos
It’s up, lost too many soldiers not to play it safe
If he walk around with that stick, it ain’t Andre 3K
Think I won’t drop the location? I still got PTSD
Motherf*ck the big three, n*gg*, it’s just big me, n*gg* bum”

From there, Drake and the Pulitzer Prize winner exchanged a few more records aimed at one another, but in the end, it was Kendrick Lamar who ultimately came out on top. On Monday (Sep. 23), while speaking at the Forbes Under 30 Summit, Metro Boomin addressed the beef and shared his thoughts on how stans took the music dispute to an entirely different realm. He expressed,

“I feel like the competition is great for the game. Hip-hop has always been a competitive genre. Even if just keeping it on music it’s not serious how everybody tries to make it. Also with hip-hop, there’s a lot of ego involved. You’re supposed to feel like you’re the best.”

The Atlanta native continued,

“When two of the top dogs in the game and you both feel like you’re the best, it’s like, ‘OK, now we gotta have a showdown.’ We saw it with Jay-Z and Nas before. I feel like more today it’s more stan culture makes it kind of weird. Back in the day, Jay-Z and Nas went at it, I was a fan of both of them. Most people were. It was like, ‘OK, it’s OK.’ It’s not like, ‘I had this side. I hate this side.’ The internet makes it a little too wild now.”

And added,

“As far as me being diplomatic, it’s just entertainment. I have love and respect for all my collaborators. I just want to see everyone do the best and help push this forward. We’re all here to deposit in and uplift this genre.”
