Bobby V On Music, Women & Chris Brown’s Chair Throwing (Sorta)

On March 23rd Bobby V, formerly known as Bobby Valentino, swung through Washington D.C. to promote his fourth album – Fly on the Wall. An in-store event was held for him at DTLR at The Mall at Prince George’s. This was my first time meeting Bobby V and afterwards I see why he’s pegged a “ladies man.” In addition to the man smelling incredible (I shoulda asked what type of cologne he was wearing), he’s very engaging with southern hospitality (originally from Jackson, MS now lives in Atlanta). Don’t believe me? Ask a few groupies that popped in to meet him ;-) I kid, sorta. In addition to the album we discussed Bobby V’s fan base, what he looks for in a woman, longevity, and Chris Brown’s recent controversial GMA incident (well, sorta). Peep our conversation below.

Your new album has a lot of collaborations, was that intentional? “Well you know every time I do an album people ask ‘Who do you have on the album? Who do you have ‘featured’ and I never really do a lot of features. But on this album right here, I really wanted to give the extra time and give the people what they wanted and give them those features.  So we got 50 Cent, Plies, Loyd Banks, we got CyHi da Prynce, and we got Twista. This is my most feature heavy album.”

I heard your Remix with R. Kelly the other day. Was that your first time doing something with him? “Definitely, I’ve always wanted to work with him throughout my career.”

How do you stay relevant? “You just have to make hit records at the end of the day and have labels and people that believe in you to continue to push you.”

Your fan base seems to have a lot of women. How do you keep that fan base? More importantly, how do you keep their attention? “I think that when you make good music, music that’s catered to women, I think that they’ll continue to listen. And when you respect women, I definitely have the utmost respect for women, so I think that women appreciate that and see that in my videos and in my songs. I think that’s what makes them continue to support me.”

Speaking of women, are you single? (at this point, Bobby V, gives a slight smile, so I ask “Sorta kinda?”) “Kinda sorta.” (Typical man, right?)

Kinda. Sorta.  Ok, What do you like in a woman? “I like a smart woman because first and foremost beauty is only skin deep.  You need someone that’s gonna be your soul mate and partner to you and that’s really gonna love you and have your best interest at heart and have your back.  So that’s really what I’m looking for in a woman. So I need someone that’s not only beautiful but I need someone that’s beautiful on the inside too.”

What do you think about the Christ Brown chair incident? “Um. What do you think about it?”

Sometimes I wanna throw a chair out the window too. “But do you do it?”

No (I laugh). “Okay, then.”

How do you feel about Elizabeth Taylor passing? “Wow, I didn’t even know. That’s a good age, to live until 79; beautiful.”

Can you tell me more about the Bobby V foundation? “Visit BobbyVfoundation.com and you’ll get a chance to see what we’re doing in the community.  We gave away turkeys during the holidays. We gave about 50-75 turkeys this year.  Also, around Christmas time we adopted 15 families and gave them their wish list for Christmas.  We also give away scholarships for people who want to pursue higher education.  So that’s what we do.  We just take donations and all of the proceeds go to trying to help those who want to pursue a higher education.”
