‘Vogue’ Insiders Deny Blindsiding Kamala Harris With Controversial Cover + Say Her Skin Wasn’t Lightened

Update #2 (Jan. 11th): Insiders from Vogue have denied accusations that the Vice President-elect was “blindsided” by the photo for the print cover of an upcoming issue.

They told NY Post:

“Both looks were selected by the VP-elect and her team.”

They added that Kamala Harris chose the photo with the pink and green background as a nod to her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

They continued:

“Our approach to working with Vice President-elect Harris and her team was to capture her as a leader and as a person, and as she was most comfortable, and so we collaborated closely on all creative decisions, including that she would dress and style herself for the shoot.”

It further explained its decision and said:

“Vogue selected the image for the print cover that we felt captured her personality and authenticity. Obviously, we love both images and are celebrating both covers digitally.”

They also denied speculation that her skin tone was lightened for the cover.

Original Story (Jan. 10th): Vice President-elect Kamala Harris has landed a spot on the cover of Vogue Magazine‘s February issue, but there seems to allegedly be a discrepancy with the the photo selected for the cover. Reportedly, the cover photo used for the magazine’s print edition is not the one agreed upon by the magazine and the VP-elect. According to sources, both Kamala Harris‘ team and Vogue Magazine agreed the cover of the February issue would be the image of Harris in a powder-blue suit with an orange background.

While that image will be used as the cover for the digital version of the issue, the one selected for the print edition is far different. The photo used for the magazine’s print edition that subscribers will receive this week, is a full-body image of Kamala Harris dressed casually in a black blazer and jeans with Converse sneakers in front of a pink and green background. Sources say this seemingly casual photo was intended for inside the magazine issue and not for the cover. See below.

Huffington Post contributor Yashar Ali took to Twitter to share some insight he received from sources, claiming that their was indeed some confusion about the Vogue cover. Ali noted,

“This is not the cover that the Vice President-elect’s team expected. –The agreed upon cover had VP-elect Harris in a powder blue suit. So folks feel blindsided this evening.”

Vogue Magazine has now posted both portraits to its Instagram and Twitter accounts. However, it is too late to make any last minute changes. The print edition will hitting newsstands very soon.
