Dennis Rodman Says He’s Going To Russia In Hopes Of Negotiating Brittney Griner’s 9 Year Prison Sentence: I Got Permission To Go Help That Girl

NBA legend Dennis Rodman is packing his bags and heading to Russia.

The Chicago Bulls champion says he was “given permission” to travel to the European country to negotiate on behalf of jailed WNBA star Brittney Griner. Earlier this month, Brittney Griner, 31, was sentenced to 9 years in Russian prison after pleading guilty to drug smuggling charges. The Phoenix Mercury player’s arrest came back in March of this year, after being found with a small vape cartridge containing cannabis oil. Her detainment came right before Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine, leaving Griner in the midst of growing tensions between Russia and Ukraine allies, including the U.S.

According to reports, Dennis Rodman, who met Russia’s president Vladimir Putin back in 2014, is going to attempt a negotiation. Rodman, 61, reportedly told news outlets this past weekend:

“I got permission to go to Russia to help that girl,”

Following up with:

“I’m trying to go this week.”

U.S. President Joe Biden is reportedly working on a negotiation as well. Government officials received praise and backlash after revealing plans to trade a Russian arms dealer for Griner. However it seems Rodman believes he can help the hooper star’s cause as well.

Reports note that Rodman has become well known in the past decade for mingling with political figures that have tense relationships with the U.S. Apparently, the retired basketball player has spoken often of his “personal friendship” with North Korea Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un, and joined former President Donald Trump in meeting with him back in 2018. Rodman was also invited and accepted Putin’s invitation to meet in Moscow back in 2014, subsequently hailing him “cool as f*ck.”

Rodman has not clarified if he received permission from the U.S. government to travel to Russia, nor has there has been any official statement made by Biden’s camp. Griner remains behind bars as her attorney works to appeal the lengthy sentence.
