Juelz Santana Says Dipset Weren’t ‘Welcome’ At Roc-A-Fella Due To Jay-Z & Cam’ron’s Rift: We Felt Like The Outcasts Of The Family

Juelz Santana is opening up on the past rift between JAY-Z and Cam’ron, and how their complicated relationship made Dipset feel “unwelcome” during their time on Roc-A-Fella Records.

During a recent interview with VladTV, Juelz Santana got candid and revealed that while he and his Dipset brothers–Cam’ron and Jim Jones– were officially signed to the label, the tension between Jay-Z and Cam’ron prevented them from feeling like “true” Roc-A-Fella artists. According to Juelz, he and his group members felt like “outcasts” at Roc-A-Fella Records.

He explained,

“The world pretty much saw the tension that was going on. Jay and Cam never really — I’m not gonna say never got along because that’s a weird word, we not kids. But they had a funny relationship. They never really clicked and meshed to where it felt like we were truly Roc-A-Fella artists.”

Juelz continued,

“Dame always showed us that love and we were cool with State Property, but we just never felt like we were like truly welcome over there. We felt like the outcasts of the family, like we gotta show off, like we gotta f**king knock the cake over to be seen and heard.”

He added,

“But I think it worked out, I think it was all in God’s plans. You know, you got what you got from the situation.”

Dipset, also known as The Diplomats were heavily involved with Roc-A-Fella in the early 2000s after the label signed Cam’ron and released his third studio album Come Home with Me. The success of the platinum-certified project, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, served as a stepping stone for the group to officially join the team.

Dipset’s debut album Diplomatic Immunity was released in 2003 and featured the hit single “Dipset Anthem,” which became a certified Hip-Hop classic. The double-disc record topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart while cracking the top 10 on the Billboard 200.

Following tensions and controversy between Cam’ron and Jay-Z, the group subsequently severed ties with Roc-A-Fella and signed with indie record label Koch Records. The group released its second album Diplomatic Immunity 2, in November 2004.

After a hiatus because of artistic differences, in 2010 the original members began recording music together again and announced a reunion album. In February 2011, it was announced that the group had signed with Interscope Records. However, in May 2013, Freekey Zekey–an original member of the group– revealed they no longer recorded for Interscope.

In late 2018, they released their first official album in 14 years, Diplomatic Ties, under Empire Distribution.

In 2021, the group participated in a Verzuz battle with The Lox.
