Update: 2Pac’s Stepfather Mutulu Shakur Granted Compassionate Release From Federal Prison After Serving 35 Years, Shakur Suffering From ‘Terminal Case’ Of Cancer

Update: (Nov. 11, 2022): Happy news for Mutulu Shakur!

According to reports, the former member of the Black Liberation Army will be released on parole on Dec. 16. Following his release, Shakur will spend what are expected to be his final days among family and friends. Mutulu Shakur, 72, reportedly served over 35 years of his 60-year prison sentence.

In October, U.S. Attorney Carlton S. Shier sanctioned a motion to release him, however, the decision that Shakur would be granted parole became public knowledge on Thursday (Nov. 10).

According to VladTV, back in 1984, Mutulu Shakur was convicted for his involvement in a 1981 conspiracy to rob armored trucks. A guard and two police were murdered at the time. United States Senior District Judge Charles S. Haight sympathized with Mutulu Shakur in court due to his health conditions.  However, it was written in the 11-page order that the First Step Act doesn’t apply to his charges that took place before November 1987. 2Pac’s stepfather was sentenced to 60 years behind bars for his crime.

Judge Charles S. Haight wrote:

“This is a difficult case. The government does not question the dire nature of Shakur’s present medical condition. Shakur also submits testimonials which describe his rehabilitation in prison and humanitarian assistance he has rendered to other inmates,” 

Judge Charles S. Haight continued:

“On the other hand, members of the family of the Brinks employee who was killed during the crimes of conviction have written to the Court, expressing their continuing grief and opposition to any reduction in Shakur’s sentence.”

Attorneys state that Shakur, who is incarcerated at Lexington Federal Medical Center in Kentucky, suffers from a “terminal, incurable case of multiple myeloma” — a cancer of plasma cells. Back in May, he was given six months to live. Shakur has only two remaining options for freedom following Haight’s ruling. His options include re-applying to the Bureau of Prisons, which has denied his attempts for a compassionate release or trying to persuade a parole board to set him free. The 72-year-old filed a habeas petition asking the federal government to grant him parole. The Bureau of Prisons granted one of Shakur’s co-defendants, Marilyn Buck, a compassionate release, who died of cancer back in 2010 a month after being released from federal prison. If released, Shakur plans to reside with his stepson, rapper, and former Outlawz member, Mopreme Shakur.
