Rolfi Cruz and Eddy Vladimir, suspects in the former Major League Baseball star’s attempted murder case, were sentenced to 30 years each in prison. They received the longest sentences among the defendants. The verdict from the First Collegiate Court of Santo Domingo revealed that eight other defendants received five to 20 year sentences behind bars. Victor Vasquez, the alleged kingpin of the attack, is one of the three defendants who were acquitted during the trial due to insufficient evidence.

As previously reported, Dominican authorities claim the target was meant to be Sixto David Fernandez, who was sitting at a table at a local bar with the victim when he was shot. David Ortiz spent six weeks in a hospital in Boston, undergoing two surgeries, after the shooting. Dominican authorities said the full sentence will be read on Feb. 8, 2023.
