Michigan Coach Sherrone Moore Fired Over Staffer Relationship… Then Arrested Hours Later in Assault Probe
Former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore went from being terminated by the university to sitting behind bars — all within a matter of hours.
The University of Michigan announced Wednesday that Moore had been fired with cause after an internal investigation found “credible evidence” he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The school said the behavior violated university policy and emphasized it has “zero tolerance” for misconduct involving staff.
But the day didn’t end there.
According to ESPN, AP News, and Fox 2 Detroit, Moore was taken into custody later that afternoon after Pittsfield Township Police responded to a call around 4:10 p.m. regarding an alleged assault on Ann Arbor–Saline Road. Officers detained a suspect at the scene and transported him to the Washtenaw County Jail, where Moore was booked while prosecutors review potential charges.
Police did not release additional details about the alleged assault but noted the incident was not random and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
No formal charges had been filed at the time of the reports, and Moore has not issued a public statement.
Moore had recently completed his second season as head coach, leading the Wolverines to a 9–3 record this year before his abrupt firing and arrest.
