Former Michigan Coach Sherrone Moore Charged With Home Invasion, Stalking and Breaking & Entering
Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore is facing serious legal trouble just days after losing his job. Moore was charged Friday with third-degree home invasion, stalking, and breaking and entering or entering without breaking, following his detainment earlier this week in Saline, Michigan. The home invasion charge is a felony.
Moore was taken into custody Wednesday — hours after Michigan fired him for cause — after police responded to a call involving an alleged assault. At the time, authorities said the incident did “not appear to be random in nature.” Moore has remained in police custody since that arrest.
The firing stemmed from Michigan’s investigation into what the school described as an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. University President Domenico Grasso confirmed Thursday that the investigation was ongoing when Moore was terminated. “When the findings of a university investigation into Coach Moore’s behavior were presented on Wednesday, we immediately terminated his employment,” Grasso wrote. “There is absolutely no tolerance for this conduct at the University of Michigan. None.”
According to The Wall Street Journal, Michigan received a tip back in October alleging Moore was involved in a relationship with a staff member. Both Moore and the woman initially denied it. The university then brought in an outside law firm to investigate further. Per the report, the woman later told investigators the relationship lasted about two years, ending in 2024, and said there were “email, text and phone records to prove it.”
Moore previously served as Michigan’s offensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh and stepped in as interim head coach twice during the 2023 season. He was promoted to head coach ahead of the 2024 season and went 17–8 over two seasons. Following his dismissal, Michigan announced associate head coach Biff Poggi will take over as interim coach for the Citrus Bowl against Texas.
