Spirit Airlines Preparing To Shut Down After $500M Rescue Deal Collapses – Thousands Of Jobs At Risk
Spirit Airlines is reportedly preparing to shut down — and the collapse could happen fast.
The budget carrier is now on the brink after a critical $500 million rescue deal fell apart, leaving the airline with few options to stay afloat.
According to new reporting, negotiations between the government and key bondholders failed to reach an agreement, effectively killing the last major effort to save the company. Without that funding, Spirit is now preparing to wind down operations and liquidate its fleet.
The airline has been struggling for months under mounting financial pressure, including rising fuel costs tied to global conflicts, increased competition, and heavy debt. Those issues intensified after a planned $3.8 billion merger with JetBlue was blocked in 2024, cutting off a major lifeline for the company.
Despite the turmoil, Spirit says flights are still operating for now — but insiders warn time is running out. In recent weeks, the company downsized its fleet and raised fares in a last-ditch effort to stabilize, but it wasn’t enough to offset losses.
At one point, the Trump administration explored stepping in with a bailout that could have given the government a major ownership stake in the airline, but internal disagreements and pushback from investors ultimately derailed the plan.
If Spirit shuts down, it would mark the first major U.S. airline collapse in years — and could have ripple effects across the travel industry, including higher ticket prices as one of the country’s biggest low-cost carriers disappears.
