Alicia Keys, Miley Cyrus Join ‘The Voice’
NBC’s The Voice has snagged Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys as new judges for the show that returns in September.
The network said it will be the first time the four-person judging panel will have two women — in previous seasons there were three male judges. Cyrus and Keys will join mainstays Blake Shelton and Adam Levine on one of television’s most popular reality shows.
Both women have experience with the show. Cyrus is an adviser this season and Keys was a mentor during a previous season.
The Voice is a singing competition broadcast on NBC. Based on the original The Voice of Holland, the concept of the series is to find new singing talent (solo or duets) contested by aspiring singers, age 15 or over, drawn from public auditions. The winner is determined by television viewers voting by telephone, Internet, SMS text, and iTunes Store purchases of the audio-recorded artists’ vocal performances. They receive US$100,000 and a record deal with Universal Music Group for winning the competition. The winners of the nine seasons have been: Javier Colon, Jermaine Paul, Cassadee Pope, Danielle Bradbery, Tessanne Chin, Josh Kaufman, Craig Wayne Boyd, Sawyer Fredericks and Jordan Smith.
The Voice began airing on April 26, 2011, as a spring TV season program. The series employs a panel of four coaches who critique the artists’ performances. Each coach guides their teams of selected artists through the remainder of the season. They also compete to ensure that their act wins the competition, thus making them the winning coach.
The original coaching panel consisted of Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green. Shakira and Usher took the places of Aguilera and Green in seasons four and six.
Similarly, Pharrell Williams and Gwen Stefani replaced Shakira and Usher in season seven, with Williams permanently replacing Green in season eight.
On the 25th of March 2016, it was confirmed that Pharrell Williams and Christina Aguilera would not be returning for Season 11 and will be replaced by Alicia Keys and Miley Cyrus.
