LeToya was an original member of one of the best selling female groups, Destiny’s Child.
“The Writing’s On Wall” album was released in August 1999. The record was in the top 40 during that year and sold 1.6 million copies. The album included hit songs and number one single “Bills, Bills, Bills”, “Bug A Boo”, “Say My Name” and “Jumpin Jumpin” The album received great reviews from critics. Also, it is one of the best selling R & B albums of all time. The album was a great seller, however, it was the smash hit single, “Say My Name” that returned the album to the top ten and peaked at number 5 on the charts in May 2000.
In addition to Luckett, the group’s original line up included Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and LaTavia Roberson. Forming in Houston, Texas in 1997, they signed to Columbia Records and Music World Entertainment. Soon the quartet was launched into mainstream recognition following the release of their 8x selling platinum album, “The Writings On The Wall.” In December 1999, LeToya and LaTavia attempted to split with manager and Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles.
The two claimed that he kept a disproportionate share of the group’s profits and unfairly favored Beyonce and Kelly. In February 2000, prior to the “Say My Name’ video premiere, Beyoncé and Kelly announced on MTV’s TRL that LeToya and LaTavia left the group and were replaced by Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin. That same year, LeToya and LaTavia filed a lawsuit against Matthew and their former group mates for breach of partnership and fiduciary duties.
Farrah left the group five months after joining. The remaining members decided to remain a trio instead of looking for a fourth member. Towards the end of 2000, LeToya and LaTavia dropped the portion of their lawsuit against Beyonce and Kelly in exchange for a settlement. Despite the turmoil, Destiny’s Child continued to be successful and became a pop culture phenomenon. In 2001 the group released their third album (first as a trio) “Survivor” which included the smash singles hits “Independent Women”, “Survivor” and “Bootylicious”. The album was a huge worldwide success.
In 2002, they took a two year hiatus and reunited for the release of their fourth and final studio album, “Destiny Fulfilled” in 2004 which was a major success. To date, they have sold more than sixty million records worldwide to date and Billboard ranks the group as one of the greatest musical trios of all time.
In totally non-related news, LeToya and her husband are expecting their first child together! See the cute announcement below.
