The line between high fashion and streetwear is continuously evolving and it has now emerged into a culture that can’t be denied. When you mix street culture and high end fashion you get what we saw on the red carpet of the 2018 BET Awards! With brands like Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton sending sneakers down their runways, we’re witnessing a revolutionary transformation among high end fashion houses, who are finally stepping down from their couturier backgrounds and embracing the hip-hop urban street culture.
Alessandro Michele of Gucci, is the latest designer to pay tribute to fashion’s heritage by collaborating with the legendary Harlem-native fashion designer Dapper Dan. As a couturier for the hip-hop legends of the ’80s, Dapper Dan designed customized pieces for everyone from Jay-Z and Salt-n-Pepa, to LL Cool J. He took the luxury of high end fashion and added a ghetto fabulous touch of his own incorporating the street fashion of the urban communities of the 80’s.
As hip hop took over Dapper Dan became a legendary designer that was the matriarch of incorporating luxury fashion brands through the lens of urban street culture.
Many of our favorite celebrities paid homage to Dapper Dan at the 2018 BET Awards as they rocked pieces from his highly anticipated Dapper Dan X Gucci Collection. We are so proud of the support that celebrities gave this African American designer on the biggest stage of the year in the urban music community.
Rick Ross went with a vibrant Gucci sweatsuit, a nod to the “Green Gucci Suit” video that he premiered during the show’s afterparty telecast.
“I believe this is our favorite collaboration,” said Ross at the BET Awards Sunday night (June 24) regarding his new record with Future.
The actual concept of the record came together after I had a conversation with Dapper Dan in Harlem and, you know, we were just talking about the golden era of hip-hop. I just told him my perspective as a youngin’ watching Eric B. and Rakim with the Gucci jackets, LL Cool J and The Fat Boys, EPMD, and the list goes on.
Ross added,
I told him the fashion always played just as much part as the music did in the whole movie. So, this was just me giving back to the golden era.
