Ex NFL Star Rae Carruth Released From Jail After Serving 18 Years For Having Pregnant Girlfriend Killed
In 2001, former Carolina Panthers wide receiver, Rae Carruth, was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder of his pregnant girlfriend, real estate agent Cherica Adams.
On November 16, 1999, Adams was 8-months pregnant and as Carruth and Adams returned from seeing a movie, the two drove separate cars. On the night in question, Carruth pulled in front of Adams, blocking her so that Van Brett Watkins Sr., a nightclub manager and associate of Carruth, could pull up alongside her vehicle. Watkins then shot Adams 4 times.
Adams was able to phone for help and soon after being admitted into the hospital, fell into a coma.
Her son, Chancellor Lee Adams, was delivered by c-section, however, due to being without oxygen for 70 minutes, suffered permanent brain damage and cerebral palsy. Cherica Adams died on December 14, 1999. Chancellor, who lives with his grandmother Saundra Adams, is now 18 years old.
Carruth was arrested days after Adams died. He was convicted in 2001 and sentenced to 18 to 24 years behind bars. Today, the 44-year-old was finally released from the Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton, North Carolina.
