EXCLUSIVE: Jay Z Denies Owing Music Veteran For ‘Reasonable Doubt’
Jay-Z Denies Owing Music Biz Veteran For ‘Reasonable Doubt’
theJasmineBRAND exclusively reports, Jay Z (real name Shawn Carter) is adamant that he doesn’t owe music veteran – Ray Herbert – royalties from his debut album. The 49-year-old music mogul wants the complete case dismissed.
Here’s the latest: Jay responded in court, denying allegations he owes Herbert any compensation from his debut album. He denies all claims that he entered a deal to give the man suing him 1% of the sales.
The Roc Nation founder argues the lawsuit was brought past the statute of limitations aka way past the deadline per the law. Jay wants the lawsuit dismissed by the New York judge.
Here’s the backstory: In June, Ray Herbert sued Jay Z claiming he was owed royalties from Jay’z debut ‘Reasonable Doubt’.
The man claimed he used his contacts to secure J’s Roc-A-Fella deal back in 1995. He alleged a deal was signed to give him 1% of the sales from the album which he said he helped master.
Herbert said he was paid for years until the checks stopped coming in 2008. He claimed he reached out to Jay-Z’s team two years later, but never heard back. Herbert sued, demanding accounting for all sales of the album and for monetary damages.
