Cam Newton Reportedly Getting Released From Carolina Panthers After Nine Seasons

After nine seasons, the Carolina Panthers are reportedly set to say goodbye to their 2011 first-round overall draft pick, Cam Newton.

According to multiple reports on Tuesday (March 24th), the Panthers are ready to move on just one week after announcing the former NFL MVP could be up for trade.

Soon after the Panthers took to their Instagram account to announce Newton was free to discuss his future with other franchises, Newton took to their comments to express his frustrations. He says,

“STOP WITH THE WORD PLAY i never asked for it THERE IS NO DODGING THIS ONE i love the @panthers TO DEATH AND WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU GUYS PLEASE DO NOT TRY AND PLAY ME, or MANIPULATE THE NARRATIVE AND ACT LIKE I WANTED THIS, you forced me into this -1OVE”

The lingering health questions months after Newton, 30, went under the knife to repair a lisfranc injury on his left foot, the team reportedly agreed to a $63 million deal with $30 million guaranteed with free-agent quarterback Teddy Bridgewater last Tuesday.

Panthers owner and General Manager, David Tepper released a statement and seemingly cemented the fact that he’s being released last Tuesday,

“Cam is one of the all-time greats in Panther history. If you ask any of our fan for some of their most memorable moment, I’m willing to bet that most of them would include Cam.”

He ends his statement on Newton’s impact,

“He has touched the lives of youth throughout the Carolinas and in Atlanta. He’s unique and I wish him all the best.”

As the team possibly prepares to move on from Cam Newton, it will reportedly will save $19.1 million in cap space for 2020. Prior to being released, the Panthers had trade talks with the Bears and Chargers before deciding to release Newton on Tuesday, according to reports.

After being selected No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Newton instantly became the face of the Panthers franchise. Newton has led the Panthers to three straight NFC South titles from 2013-2015, a Super Bowl and four total postseason appearances.

 From 2011 to 2018, Newton averaged over 3,500 passing yards and 22 touchdowns plus 600 rushing yards and seven touchdowns per season.
