Cassie Speaks On Becoming An Independent Artist After Leaving Bad Boy Records: It’s So Different To Do Whatever I Want
R&B singer Cassie (real name Cassandra Ventura) recently opened up about leaving Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records and becoming an independent artist.
While on Ciara‘s weekly Apple Music show Level Up Radio, Cassie reflected on her journey to becoming an independent artist after her long-term affiliation with Bad Boy Records. Cassie‘s 2006 debut single, “Me & U,” was produced by the label, and she continued to release singles with Bad Boy for another 11 years. At the same time, she also dated the music mogul for more than a decade.
Her last track with the label was 2017’s “Don’t Play It Safe.”
However, after breaking up with Diddy in 2018, Cassie parted ways with the label and started her own independent one, Ventura Music.

Speaking on this transition, Cassie stated:
“I left Bad Boy. I was able to get out of my deal. So now I’m independent. So that’s just very different from the start.”
She continued:
“It’s so different. And I mean, even now I’m just in a different place in my life. It’s the place to be, just to own your stuff and just… You could do whatever you want. You could wake up tomorrow and be like, ‘Okay, I want to record four records. And then put them out and it’s mine. And what you going to say?'”
Ciara–who is also an independent artist through her own label, Beauty Marks Entertainment–largely agreed with Cassie‘s sentiments regarding the freedom of being independent. She responded:
“And you don’t feel the pressure of like having to wait on if someone’s going to like something or have to wait on someone else to make a decision for you. You get to make the decision for yourself. And that’s true girl empowerment right there.”
At this point, Ciara referred to Cassie‘s 15-year-old “Me & U” as a “classic,” to which Cassie replied:
“When I hear people playing it still, I’m like, ‘That song is so old.’ But it’s like, ‘Okay, I’ll accept the classic…'”
