Donald Glover & “Atlanta” Crew Were Racially Harassed In London While Filming
Donald Glover And Co-Writers Recount Racial Harassment While Filming Season Three Of ‘Atlanta’ In London
Donald Glover was right; things definitely just got weird. theJasminBrand.com previously reported that the FX hit Atlanta was coming to an end after the concurring third and fourth seasons. Atlanta show creator and Primetime Emmy Award winner Donald Glover ascribed the show’s end to unfavorable conditions, “death being natural,” and things starting to get “weird.”
During the Television Critics Association’s virtual winter press conference, Donald Glover and his co-writers Stefani Robinson and Stephen Glover — Donald’s brother — recount the time when they felt like “fish out of water” while producing their comedy-drama. The Atlanta writers recall being racially harassed outside of a London pub. While filming the highly awaited third season, the Emmy writers remember a group of individuals approaching the Atlanta crew.
Stephen Glover remarked that the racially charged encounter had occurred on the writer’s first night in London.
“This group of people walk up. And maybe one of them kind of notices Donald or recognizes him,” Stephen said. “And she stops, and they start asking if they know anywhere around here to get something to drink. I think we were talking to them for a second. It’s this girl and two or three guys.”
Stephen Glover continues:
“Mind you, all of the writers on Atlanta are Black. So, he’s making a reference that we all have hammers, and we can just break into this place, which we kind of ignored.”
Hammers is London slang for gun.
“It was so insulting, but not insulting at the same time because it took us five minutes to fully understand. He got to a point of like if the insinuation was lost on us, he got specific and he was like, ‘You guys are Black, you’ve gone to jail and you do things like that.’ Like he kept doubling down on it.”
Stephen recalls that the unidentified man later picked up his female friend who was speaking with one of the Atlanta writers. The man then yelled:
“Run. They are going to rape you, like, rape you.”
“The girl was literally, like, ‘I’m sorry,’ as she’s being taken away.”

Donald Glover noted:
“We are just standing there, like, ‘What just happened?”
The long-awaited third season of Atlanta is set to premiere on FX on March 24th. The fourth and final season of Atlanta will debut later this fall.
