NBA YoungBoy Pushes To Have Song Lyrics Excluded From California Case
YoungBoy Never Broke Again, also known as NBA YoungBoy does not was his song lyrics included in his legal case in California.
According to reports, the 22-year-old rapper and his legal team have filed paperwork in an effort to stop the government’s attempts at introducing evidence of “other acts,” including song lyrics, in connection with his California case. In a motion filed this month in opposition to the government, it’s noted that YoungBoy—real name is Kentrell Gaulden—is charged with having possessed “a specific FN .45 caliber pistol” and ammo within the Central District of California.

Reportedly, the defense is requesting that the court take action to prevent the government’s attempt to have evidence of “other acts” presented during the trial, including song lyrics, information related to a separate pending case in Louisiana, an “unprosecuted event” in Philadelphia, and social media activity.

The defense specially mentions two of NBA YoungBoy’s songs, “Gunsmoke” and “Life Support. Per the defense, while an FN pistol is indeed mentioned in the “Gunsmoke” lyrics, the song was released prior to the rapper purchasing an FN gun in the case. With the track “Life Support,” which includes a reference to Shyne Jewelers, the defense states that YoungBoy “does not dispute the commercial relationship” between himself and Shyne.
According to court documents, the defense has argued, that the use of such additional materials will garner “jury confusion” in the case:
“The court has the authority to exclude marginally relevant evidence when its probative value is substantially outweighed by its prejudicial effect which will occur when hardcore rap lyrics are presented to this jury.”
