Kenya Barris’ Sister Served Him w/ Court Documents Amid ‘You People’ Premiere For Alleged Breach Of Contract
Kenya Barris’ family drama found its way into his “You People” film premiere.
As you may know, Netflix’s “You People” debuted atop the streaming service’s top 10 movies days after its Jan. 27 premiere with 55.65 million hours viewed late last month. The movie, described to be an “outrageous romantic comedy,” is about an interracial couple dating as their families come to terms with modern love, cultural clashes, societal expectations, and generational differences.
While Hollywood’s famed director, Kenya Barris, seemingly enjoyed adding another project to his resume, things took a left turn off-screen at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, California when his sister, Colette Barris, served him with court documents. According to reports, the “Black-ish” creator was admiring the audience’s reaction to the star-studded premiere when someone from the paparazzi, who turned out to be a process server, hit Barris with court papers (on Jan. 17, at 9:54 p.m) and said:
“You’ve been served.”

The court documents, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, reportedly stemmed from a legal dispute between Barris and Colette Barris, which accuses the media mogul of “breach of contract.” As per the court filings, on Feb. 22, 2021, the siblings entered into a legal agreement that read:
“The parties in pertinent part agreed ‘not to communicate any disparaging remarks about each other or about any matters that led to this Agreement.’”
The papers added:
“In or around June 2022, [Kenya] stated to a third party that (1) Plaintiff was a ’70-year-old no talent hack’ and (2) Plaintiff had not earned the ‘right to be a show creator’ but instead ‘ wanted to go to the front of the line.’”
In addition to “You People,” some of Barris’ most popular work includes TV series “Grown-ish,” “Black-ish,” and “Girlfriends.” He’s also attached to hit films “Girls Trip,” “Coming 2 America” and the Disney Plus reboot of “Cheaper By the Dozen.”
