Xscape Addresses The Notion They Weren’t Considered Cute Early In Their Careers, Especially After Being Dissed By Biggie
The women of Xscape are reflecting on how they were unfairly judged based on their looks at the start of their careers, including being dissed by The Notorious B.I.G.
During an appearance on The Morning Hustle radio show, Kandi Burruss, Tamika “Tiny” Harris, and Tamika Scott addressed recent comments by producer Jermaine Dupri.
Dupri, who discovered the group and signed them to his So So Def label in the early ‘90s, claimed during his visit to the R&B Money Podcast that it was hard to market them initially because people didn’t “consider them cute.”

According to Dupri, the notion skyrocketed after Biggie rapped the infamous line in his track “Just Playing (Dreams)”:
“I’ll f**k RuPaul before I f**k them ugly a** Xscape b***ches.”
Kandi recalled feeling hurt by the lyric, revealing that Biggie tried to apologize to her on the day of his death in 1997, but she shut him down. Tiny, on the other hand, said she accepted his apology:
“He was very nice. He was very apologetic. He basically said, ‘I don’t know what I was thinking — I’m ugly!’”
She revealed Biggie was killed shortly after that interaction. Despite the criticism, the women shared that Biggie was actually a fan and attended several of their shows. But the sting of his words stuck with them, and they refused him entry anytime he tried to visit them after their performance.
Despite the early criticism over their image, the group proved their talent with three platinum-selling albums and a reputation as one of the most vocally strong girl groups of their era.
