Taye Diggs Opens Up About Supporting His Sister w/ Schizophrenia: ‘Her Life Didn’t Have To Stop, & I Didn’t Have To Stop Being A Part Of Her Life’

Taye Diggs is opening up about supporting his sister, Christian Diggs, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

When Taye first learned about his sister’s condition, he told PEOPLE that he “pulled away for a bit” because he didn’t know where he fit in:

“When we grew up, we were very, very close… but when she started her twenties, that’s when her behavior started to change. The reports that I was getting from other family members, because I was away working, were quite frightening… and I had no idea how to deal with it.”

He remembers, “All of a sudden all of these crazy things were happening to her,” but relief came after Taye and his family “found her a solid therapist who had the tools to lead us to her diagnosis.”

Taye added:

“She’s the same person. You just have to make some adjustments and really support and try to kind of step out of your own perspective and not be afraid to be there. Her life didn’t have to stop. And I didn’t have to stop being a part of her life. That was, and continues to be, very encouraging.”

Taye and Christian teamed up with Bristol Myers Squibb for the Live Your PosSCZible campaign, which offers resources and celebrates those living with schizophrenia.

About the campaign, he said:

“These are places you can go where you can find a community for other people who are going through the same thing and doing the research. I wish this was around when my sister was diagnosed.”
