For those who missed it, MC was honored as an industry icon over the summer at the iHeartRadio Music Awards. Mariah, who sat front row during tribute performances of her hits, appeared a bit disengaged when #MuniLong performed We Belong Together. Her reaction quickly went viral online after the event.
In a recent GQ interview, when asked if she likes it when people cover her records, Mariah said, “Not really.” However, she explained that when it comes to Muni’s cover, she couldn’t really hear. “I didn’t even hear the cover. I didn’t know it happened. No one told me. I just didn’t know that she had done ‘We Belong Together’ [as a cover] ‘cause her song was so similar to ‘We Belong Together.’ I had no idea that she did ‘We Belong Together.’”
Mariah continued, “I’m very honored and flattered that she did it. I love Muni Long, she’s a great person, umm, but I just don’t like people doing my songs.”
While Muni did react to the discourse surrounding her cover, saying “Nobody can sing Mariah’s songs like Mariah. Nobody. I didn’t choose that,” she’s yet to weigh in on Mariah’s recent interview.
