Queen Latifah Reveals “Living Single” Was Originally Called “My Girls” – & She Made a Completely Different Theme Song
The sitcom now known as Living Single was originally going to be called My Girls — and Queen Latifah says she even created a completely different theme song for that first title.
In a new episode of the ReLiving Single podcast, the actress and rapper explains that the show’s working name inspired an entirely separate musical direction. “I did a whole theme song for the original name of the show, My Girls, which was totally different, completely different but very soulful, just vibe-y,” she shared. “I like to sing and rap and mix it all together.”
But once producers changed the title to Living Single, she scrapped that early version and started over. “I went back to the lab… I was just thinking about Living Single. I’m thinking about what we’re doing. What is it like, these four girls doing their thing?”
Latifah collaborated with rapper-producer Def Jef to reimagine the track, saying he “did the beat on the machine” while she wrote the lyrics and added the iconic hook: “Check, check, check it out.”
The revamped theme became one of the most recognizable parts of Living Single, which ran from 1993 to 1998 and remains a beloved cultural touchstone for its portrayal of Black friendship, love, career hustle, and humor.
