Ryan Coogler Reacts to ‘Sinners’ Making Oscar History – “You Don’t Make Movies for Awards”
Director Ryan Coogler is opening up about the massive awards buzz surrounding his film Sinners — and he’s making it clear that chasing trophies was never the goal.
In a recent interview, Coogler addressed the historic attention the film has received during awards season after Sinners earned 16 Academy Award nominations, marking the most nominations ever received by a single film.
Despite the milestone, Coogler says the recognition isn’t what drives his filmmaking.
“You don’t make movies for awards,” the director explained. “You make movies for audiences.”
Coogler also described the awards season spotlight as simply part of the job that comes with releasing a major film.
“It’s an opportunity. It’s a job,” he said while reflecting on the attention surrounding Sinners.
The filmmaker — who also discussed upcoming projects including a new X-Files reboot and development on Black Panther 3 — said he ultimately feels grateful for the moment, noting he feels “really fortunate” amid the film’s historic run.
