[UPDATE] Judge Grants $1 M*rder Bond For Georgia Woman Accused Of Taking Pills To Induce Abortion
A judge in Kingsland, Georgia set an unusually low bond of just $1 for a 31-year-old woman facing a m*rder charge after police say she took pills to induce an abortion.
At a hearing Monday (Mar. 23), Superior Court Judge Steven Blackerby acknowledged the legal challenges ahead, saying, “I think that charge is extremely problematic” and that it “is going to be a hard charge to convict upon.” Along with the symbolic $1 bond for the m*rder count, Blackerby also ordered $1,000 bonds on each of the two accompanying dr*g charges, meaning the total bond was $2,001. Online records show the woman, identified as Alexia Moore, had spent nearly three weeks in jail before posting bond and being released.
As reported, Moore was arrested March?4 after going to a hospital on Dec. 30, complaining of abdominal pain. According to the arrest warrant, she told medical staff she had taken misoprostol, a dr*g used in medication abortions, and the opioid oxycodone, and the fetus briefly survived after delivery. Prosecutors did not oppose the low bond; District Attorney Keith Higgins told the judge police did not consult his office before filing charges. The Georgia Public Defender Council, representing Moore, praised the bond decision, stating, “Our system works best when courts carefully weigh the facts, uphold constitutional protections, and safeguard the rights of every person who comes before them.”
