Eligible Men 18 To 25 Will Be Automatically Registered For U.S. Military Draft Pool Under Rule Change
The U.S. government is moving forward with a major change to how draft registration works, with eligible men set to be automatically enrolled starting in December.
The shift stems from a provision in the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, which directs the Selective Service System to take over the registration process instead of requiring individuals to sign up themselves. As the agency explained, “This statutory change transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources.” Under the current system, most men between 18 and 25 must register within 30 days of turning 18.
The new rule would automate that process using existing federal data, with officials saying it will create a more efficient system and improve compliance as registration rates have declined in recent years. Importantly, this update does not mean a military draft is being reinstated. The U.S. still operates under an all-volunteer military, and any actual draft would require approval from Congress and the president in the event of a national emergency.
For now, the change is focused solely on how eligible men are added to the system, replacing the longstanding requirement that they register on their own.
