Gabby Douglas’ Mom ‘Not Embarrassed About Bankruptcy’

Over the weekend, we learned that Gabby Douglas’ mother, Natalie Hawkins, had filed bankruptcy in January. According to reports, Natalie, who is a single mother of four, filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy (Chapter 13 allows individuals to reorganize their finances and pay their debts back following a court-approved plan).

According to filings, she receives about $2,500 a month (Social Security disability benefits and child support filings), while her assets totaling $163,706, and about $80,000 in debts, mostly from her mortgage. In an interview with a London reporter, Natalie responded to the bankruptcy, explaining that she’s not embarrassed:
“It’s my story, it’s part of me. I’m not even embarrassed about it…It shows that even though I didn’t like to have to do it, I’m glad there was something there for me to be able to protect my home.”
