Kelis Covers ‘Hunger’ + Spills the Beans on Her New Album

Back in September, Kelis did an interview with AllSaints Basement, in which she talked about her upcoming album. In the interview she said that she was finishing up her next album, and that she would come out with a new single once the new year came around. Well it’s about that time now, with 2012 just a few days away. And already the media is buzzing in anticipation of some new music from Kelis. Her first album was released in 1999, and her latest one, “Flesh Tone,” was released in 2010. In between all of that she married rapper Nas (in 2005) and then divorced him (in 2010). She also gave birth to their son, Knight, in 2009. Here are some quotes from her most recent interview.

On if she’d always planned to make music:

“I can’t say that it was the plan. My parents were always really good at directing us, and encouraging us in what we naturally did well. And my sisters are tone deaf (laughing) so I think it was just the natural [thing for me]. It just, sort of, happened. I went to theater school and that was my major. And I was thinking about musical theater. And it just, sort of, happened. The next thing you know I wake up and it was 5 albums later.”

On where she gets inspiration from:

“I’m a sponge. Everything around causes inflections in my thoughts and how I view the world. And then I, kind of, regurgitate it out in music and videos. It’s just spontaneous.”

On her fashion style:

“I wear what I like and I wear what’s exciting. I think that the way that I dress every day, kind of, gives you an idea of how I’m feeling. I’m a moody dresser. It all depends on the day, and where I’m going. And I love a theme. This is the way that I can express myself. So if you don’t know me, and I walk into a room, I’m like walking art, and that’s how it should be.”

On the new album:

“I’m finishing up my album, Lord willing, in the next few weeks. And then I’m just going to, hopefully, take some time to regroup. I’ve been on tour for four months now, so you definitely get to the point where you’re like ‘I need a haircut, I need a scrub.’ That’ll probably take a few months. And then I’ll be back out on the road again, after the new year, with a new record.”
