[Updated] Misa Hylton, Justin Combs’ Mother, Responds to Scholarship Controversy
As some of you know, Diddy’s 18-year-old son, Justin Combs, has been awarded a full athletic scholarship to play football at UCLA this fall. And during a recent CNN segment, the question was asked,
“Should P. Diddy’s son return $54,000 college scholarship?”
Although Justin reportedly graduated with a 3.75 G.P.A., some argue that because Diddy is worth and has a sh*t-load of money (reportedly, he made $45 million in 2012, and is worth $500 million) and should pay for his son’s tuition, allowing for another potential student to benefit from the scholarship. The university spokesman, Ricardo Vazquez, totally disagrees. In a recent interview, he defended the university’s reasoning for granting Justin with the scholarship explaining:
“There is a big separation between financial aid based on need and how that’s funded and how athletic scholarships are funded and awarded to students…Unlike need-based scholarships, athletic scholarships are awarded to students strictly on the basis of their athletic and academic ability, and not on a student’s financial need…”
What do you think? Since Diddy has money, should he pay for his son’s tuition and give another student the opportunity to have the scholarship? Or should your parent’s income not determine whether or not you receive an athletic scholarship?

After the stories, comments and media buzz surrounding the story hit, Thursday afternoon, Justin’s mother, Misa Hylton, responded. On Twitter, she respectfully rejected the notion that her son didn’t earn his scholarship. She wrote:

Diddy is rich. His son is not! He earned it!
His son earned the scholarship so he should keep it.
Why should he return it, we give scholarship to CEO’s offprings that is rich.
I agree with the UCLA. It would be the same if he had been awarded an academic scholarship. It is an athletic scholarship not a financial scholarship. Diddy’s son’s ability earned him the scholarship. I am sure there are many students who win scholarships athletic/academic whose parents have the ability to pay and not pointed out to return the monies!
He earned it. If he wanted to get a free ride off his dad I’m sure he would’ve gone to a more expensive school. Kudos to Justin for making his own way.

i agree 100% i don’t think anyone should judge for taking the scholarship. that’s his dads money not his. he can’t help that he was born into a rich family. plus him earning his own way into college gives him a sense pride and work ethic
Let him keep it, it’s his his father nor his mother will be able to say they paid their son’s way. This will give him the satisfaction of acheivment. Plus the school will one day will receive some endowment money and there will be a Justin Combs Music and Art Center. I love it.

I think the best response came from Mike Wilbon on Pardon the Interruption, today. When has this EVER been a controversy for rich White men, whose children are awarded academic (and even athletic) scholarships? Like Wilbon stated, surely there are countless children of rich children who have been on scholarship at UC- Los Angeles! But, when it happens to a high profile rich Black man, the situation is now a problem. Those who raised this (non)issue should be ashamed of themselves.
Merit Scholarship based on scholastic achievement. Good luck and must success to that man. UCLA football program is no joke!
