Cassie’s Album Confidence, “People aren’t going to expect me to come out w/ what I have.”

V Magazine highlights the highly anticipated albums of five pop divas who have been under the radar lately musically. Solange Knowles, Jojo, MNDR (Amanda Warner), British singer VV Brown and Cassie are all featured for the piece. In her interview, Cassie (real name Cassandra Ventura) describes her new sound for her upcoming album. She says,
“At the time I made the record I went out to Ibiza and I really started to feel these jungle beats. But at the same time I wanted to keep my ‘Me and U’ tone, really simple and clean. I have a lot of friends who are DJ’s and they like to mix, so I like to leave a really clean skeleton with the vocal.”
Since the release of her self-titled debut album in 2006, the 25-year-old singer has been on a personal hiatus and she resolved record label and production issues, joining Interscope in 2009 and beginning to work with producers other than Ryan Leslie who first discovered her. Thankfully, all that time gave her enough breathing room to work on material for her new album. She explained,
“I have hundreds of songs recorded for this album. I’ve been working on it for a long time. Finally I had to decide my direction. I felt kind of exposed when I stopped working in the studio. My friends would call me to hang out and I would say, ‘nope going in the studio,’ and they’d say, ‘you’ve been in the studio for four years!'”
Her album is set for release in May and is rumored to be mostly produced by Kanye West. A snippet trailer for the first single “King of Hearts” premiered back in December. With her combination of old and new sounds, Cassie describes herself this year as,
“….giving 90’s supermodel. It’s the perfect definition of who I am right now and what I’m going through. People aren’t going to expect me to come out with what I have.”
