[EXCLUSIVE] Robin Thicke: Small, Legal Victory in Battle With Marvin Gaye’s Family
But in response, Gaye’s children counter-sued Thicke and his producers, as well as EMI April, a smaller music publishing company owned by Sony/ATV, saying EMI April failed to protect the Gaye catalog. While Gaye’s family members and the music publisher reached a settlement, they’re still duking it out in court with the “Blurred Lines” trio.
The legal battle has been going on and has turned nasty with each side accusing the other of playing dirty legal games. Thicke filed docs last month in which he accused the family of refusing to hand over documents that proved he didn’t steal Gaye’s music.
In his court docs, Thicke explains that Gaye’s family is refusing to hand over communications with Marvin’s music publisher EMI. He states that prior to filing suit against him they went to EMI and demanded they sue over “Blurred Lines”, but they refused to do so claiming the songs were NOT at all similar and Thicke’s song was an original work.
In short, the federal court judge has ordered them to hand over confidential documents that they previously refused to give the singer and the court battle continues.
