Execs Explain Why “The Carmichael Show” Was Canceled

Fans were shocked to learn last month that “The Carmichael Show” had been canceled after three seasons. This week, NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke’ explained why the plug had been pulled on the NBC comedy explaining,

It was hard to find a stable audience.

NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt added that Carmichael had gotten more seasons than lots of their other series that had been canceled earlier on.

Superstore is getting a third season, and we cancelled six or seven of these (comedy) shows in their earlier life.

Salke added,

We loved the show and the cast and Jerrod from the start. It’s been a labor of love. Everyone was hoping the show would perform and grow. We saw a great stable audience slowly building with critical attention, but it remained in a challenging situation. We looked at the show with Jerrod, (and asked) what’s the long term plan? Is there a chance for real big success? Maybe it’s best to let the show end.

Are you sad to see the show go?

“It was hard to find a stable audience.”

Yathink? Y’all never gave it a stable time slot. Y’all never gave it a traditional launch (networks never drop new episodes of valued sitcoms during the dog days of summer). Y’all never ordered enough episodes to build a stable audience (a first season of less than ten new episodes is a joke for a sitcom). Y’all never credibly promoted it (the most publicity this show ever received was over its cancellation).

It’d be nice if a Netflix picked this back up. But I ain’t holding my breath.

it would have never lasted during the regular fall or spring. During that time there is actual competition. There is just too much competition for a series like that to contend with.

I never saw any advertising for the show. Only way I knew about it was from social media. No articles…no publicity. Nada. They complain about a stable audience?

This is my favorite show on TV at the moment. I’ve watched the Carmichael Show since episode 1 and I knew then that it would struggle to stay on Network tv. It reminds me a lot of All In the Family and unfortunately in today’s climate ppl are too sensitive to discuss REAL issues with REAL emotions. We are living in a PC world and its sad. The Carmichael show touches on every topic relevant to today’s culture and the different opinions is what makes it authentic. I read somewhere that the episode in this season “Shoot-Upable” was the straw that broke this shows back. The execs were like ‘no! uh uh’
The episode was so raw that NBC didn’t even air it. I watched it on HULU. I hope that Netflix or HULU picks this show up for more brand new episodes!!!
