Oprah Reveals Why She Makes Few Public Appearances w Stedman
Oprah has been relatively open about her personal life, but there is one exception. The media mogul is selective about what she shares in terms of her relationship with her longtime boyfriend, Stedman Graham. The couple have been together since 1986. They were engaged to be married in November 1992, but the ceremony never took place.
Oprah admits that the media writing negative and often false stories took a toll on her years ago, which resulted in her making a decision about trying to keep some of Graham off limits to the public. She says,
I’ve lived…every other week in the tabloids…..Every time I would get so upset about it, Maya [Angelou] would say, ‘But babe, you don’t have anything to do with that, She would respond with tears, ‘But they’re saying. You know it’s not true. You don’t know what it’s like when people are saying things about you.’
She says the late poet and writer told her,
But you’re not in it. It has nothing to do with you. It has to do with whoever sat down at the computer at that moment. It’s been happening so long, she actually said, ‘Whoever sitting at that typewriter, they’re thinking what can we say this week that’s going to sell some stories.’
Oprah continues,
It’s also why I stopped making as many public appearances with Stedman. Because I realized that every time there’s a new photograph, there is a new story. It’s an invitation.
Should more couples try to keep their relationship out of the public eye?
