Brooklyn residents finally got their long-awaited wish, as one of its most famous residents officially has a street named in their honor. Family, friends and fans were on hand earlier this week when Notorious B.I.G. was bestowed a street name right where he grew up.

22 years after he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting, Notorious B.I.G. aka Biggie Smalls, finally has his memory permanently displayed on a popular Brooklyn street where he was raised. Local city officials recently renamed the corner of St. James Place and Fulton Street to “Christopher Wallace Way” following a controversial, years-long push by local city activists.

Fans of the rapper initially introduced co-naming the street back in 2013, but the request was denied by local community board members who thought that Biggie’s controversial lyrics were not a good example for local youth to follow. After several years of attempts, the Brooklyn City Council approved the co-naming in fall 2018.

Lil Kim was on hand for the ceremony, appearing emotional as she spoke about what the street renaming means:

“I always knew this day was gonna come. I used to dream about a street being named after Biggie, because it was only right.”

Fellow rapper Lil Cease, Biggie’s son CJ (with ex-wife Faith Evans), his mother, as well as a host of other family and friends were all there celebrating the occasion despite the rainy weather.
