Walmart Pulls Juneteenth ‘Celebration’ Themed Ice Cream Following Backlash & Criticism: We Sincerely Apologize
It seems like Walmart’s latest Juneteenth rollout was short-lived!
Walmart has landed in the hot seat after shoppers have noticed its newest marketing layout for Juneteenth. For those who may not be aware, Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrated on June 19 that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. It is also often observed for celebrating African-Americans culture and excellence. Walmart is the latest major corporation to sell products seemingly dedicated to the important holiday.
Recently the multinational retail corporation stocked its shelves with Juneteenth-themed ice cream. However, following the questionable ice cream rollout, it didn’t take long for social media users to point out the flaws within the marketing ploy and accuse the company of trying to “capitalize off Juneteenth.” One Twitter user said,
“Tbh I wouldn’t be upset if the Juneteenth ice cream was black owned but I have a huge issue with Walmart trying to capitalize off Juneteenth and the money going all to white foke”
Other Twitter users said,
After trending online for their Juneteenth ice cream, Walmart issued an apology and announced they were pulling the product from their stores. On May 23, the company released a statement that said,
“Juneteenth holiday marks a celebration of freedom and independence. However, we received feedback that a few items caused concern for some of our customers and we sincerely apologize. We are reviewing our assortment and will remove items as appropriate.”
