According to Fortune, the CEO and his management team have been issuing “stern warnings” against speaking about the rap star, real name Shawn Carter, despite Jay-Z being one of 9 board members at the organization.
Anonymous employees claim they were told not to reference the Grammy winner on any internal company forums like email or messaging system Slack, noting that they weren’t given any reason for the mandate.
The report additionally notes that Block, which acquired a major stake in Jay-Z’s music streaming platform Tidal in 2021, has been going through a series of layoffs as of late, disgruntling workers.
Tidal reportedly cut dozens from its small staff just last week, and Block’s other acquisitions, including Cashapp, and Square, are expected to have more layoffs in the near future.
It’s also noted that shortly before the order was given, several employees began questioning Jay-Z’s role at Block in light of his longtime friend Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ federal arrest on RICO sex trafficking charges.
