House Passes SAVE Act Requiring Proof Of Citizenship To Vote In Federal Elections
The House just passed a bill that could change how millions of Americans register to vote.
The SAVE Act would require people to show proof of U.S. citizenship before registering to vote in federal elections. Acceptable documents include a U.S. passport, birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, or a government-issued photo ID that shows citizenship status.
Supporters say the bill is meant to protect election integrity. Critics argue it targets a rare issue and creates unnecessary barriers for eligible voters.
Voting rights groups warn the bill could make it harder for people who do not have easy access to these documents. That includes low-income families, rural voters, young people, and communities of color who already face hurdles at the ballot box. The bill now heads to the Senate.
It is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections. Advocates say this law adds red tape without solving a real problem.
What do you think? Solving a problem or creating one?
