A TUI flight from Cancún to London Gatwick took a chaotic turn when a couple was caught smoking in the airplane bathroom. The flight was forced to divert to Bangor, Maine on the night of July 8, where the couple was removed after refusing to follow instructions from the flight crew.

That’s when the real nightmare began. With the crew unable to continue due to work-hour limits, passengers were stuck on the plane for hours, then moved to a remote section of the airport connected to a military base.

According to reports many people slept on benches or makeshift airbeds with little food, no access to luggage, and barely any updates.

In total, travelers were stranded for 17 hours before a new crew arrived and the flight finally departed on the afternoon of July 9.
