Tennis Star Naomi Osaka Says She Expected To Quit The Sport After Giving Birth
Naomi Osaka is opening up about motherhood.
During a recent screening of her doc #TheSecondSet, Naomi told PEOPLE that she initially thought she would step away from tennis after having a child: “I was one of those people that thought when I had a kid I would stop playing tennis.”
However, motherhood inspired her to continue competing: “While I was pregnant, I was kind of very inspired. I also wanted my daughter to be able to see me play tennis. It was such a big part of my life and I feel like she doesn’t know it, but she definitely inspired me to continue.”

Osaka welcomed her daughter, Shai, with her ex-boyfriend #Cordae in July 2023 and returned to training just a week later, despite the challenges of balancing tennis with life as a new mom.
Fans can catch her journey back to the court when The Second Set releases on Tubi on Sunday, Aug. 24.
