Stephen A. Smith Issues Public Apology After Mispronouncing Omega Psi Phi
Stephen A. Smith is owning a recent on-air misstep. The ESPN personality took to X to publicly apologize to members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. after admitting he mispronounced the fraternity’s name during a heated moment earlier this week.
In his post, Smith explained that he became aware of the mistake only minutes before issuing the apology, saying he was so focused on “clapping back” at critics that he didn’t realize the error in real time. “I absolutely had no idea I’d done so until I was informed,” Smith wrote, calling the slip-up “inexcusable.”
The outspoken commentator made it clear the responsibility was his alone, stressing that the moment didn’t reflect how he feels about the fraternity or its members. “Totally my fault,” Smith said, adding that it’s “not a mistake I should ever make.”
Smith, who emphasized his pride in calling members of Omega Psi Phi his brothers, also acknowledged the need to be more mindful moving forward. “Gotta slow down and speak clearer,” he wrote in the message.
Smith closed his statement with a direct and personal sign-off, reiterating his regret and offering “sincere apologies” to Omega Psi Phi as the conversation continued to ripple across social media.
