Mariah Carey Refuses The ‘Legend’ Label Despite 19 No. 1 Hits: ‘I’m Just Still Working’
Mariah Carey is reflecting on her legacy — but she’s not ready to label it that way herself.
The global superstar graces the latest cover of Billboard, where she opened up about her decades-long career, philanthropy and being named MusiCares’ 2026 Person of the Year. Despite her massive impact on music, Carey made it clear she doesn’t view herself through the same lens many fans do.
“Everybody has their own little meanings for what things they say,” Carey told the outlet. “But I don’t call myself a legend. I’m just still working, still trying hard.”
Carey will be honored by the Recording Academy’s philanthropic arm on January 30, joining past recipients like Dolly Parton and Billy Joel.
Carey also emphasized giving back, noting, “All of us should do what we can to give back something.”
