HBO Max & Paramount + To Merge Into One Streaming App As Part Of The Paramount-Warner Bros. Deal
Paramount Skydance has confirmed that once its planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery is completed, the company intends to combine its Paramount+ and HBO Max streaming platforms into a single service. During a Monday investor call, CEO David Ellison said the consolidation will create a bigger streaming footprint, noting that “we do plan to put the two services together, which today gives us a little over 200 million direct-to-consumer subscribers.”
Ellison stressed that even as the platforms merge, the HBO brand will remain distinct within the new structure, saying “our viewpoint is HBO should stay HBO” and praising its legacy content and reputation. He added that this move is intended to better position the combined service to compete with larger rivals in an increasingly crowded streaming landscape.
The announcement follows Paramount Skydance’s $110-billion deal to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery after a bidding war with Netflix, which ultimately withdrew its offer.
